El ostrero de Nueva Zelanda es un ave costera enteramente negra de las costas de Nueva Zelanda. Habita en costas rocosas, playas y estuarios donde se alimenta de mejillones, lapas y otros invertebrados. Relativamente sedentario, con parejas que mantienen territorios costeros. Anida en el suelo en costas rocosas o gravosas. La depredación por mamíferos introducidos y la perturbación humana son las principales amenazas para sus colonias de cría.
