El ostrero australiano es un ave costera grande de las costas australianas. Tiene partes superiores pardas, partes inferiores blancas y pico rojo brillante. Se alimenta de moluscos, gusanos y crustáceos en playas, estuarios y costas rocosas. Produce una llamada estridente y ruidosa. Las parejas mantienen territorios de alimentación. Anida en el suelo en zonas costeras. Afectado por la perturbación humana y la pérdida de hábitat costero.
