El ostrero negro es un ostrero completamente negro de las costas rocosas de la costa del Pacífico de América del Sur, desde Perú hasta Tierra del Fuego. Mide unos 42-45 cm. Tiene pico anaranjado-rojo brillante, ojos rojos y patas rosadas. Se alimenta de mejillones, lapas y otros moluscos que abre con su pico especializado. Habita en costas rocosas batidas por el oleaje. Es territorial y forma parejas estables.
