El ostrero americano es un ave costera de América, de color negro en las partes superiores y blanco en las inferiores, con llamativo pico rojo. Habita en playas, marismas, estuarios y costas rocosas desde el nordeste de Canadá hasta Argentina. Sondea bivalvos, gusanos poliquetos y otros invertebrados en la zona intermareal. Anida en el suelo en playas y dunas. La perturbación de las zonas de anidación es una amenaza importante para las poblaciones reproductoras.
