O ostraceiro-eurasiático é uma ave costeira de tamanho médio com o dorso preto e o ventre branco, bico alaranjado brilhante e patas cor-de-rosa. Distribui-se pelas costas europeias e asiáticas e algumas zonas de invernagem em África ocidental. Usa o bico para abrir bivalves, sondar vermes ou capturar caranguejos. Nidifica em costas, sapais e por vezes em zonas agrícolas afastadas da costa. As famílias podem transmitir técnicas de alimentação especializadas de pais para filhos.
