O ostraceiro-da-nova-zelândia é uma ave costeira inteiramente negra das costas da Nova Zelândia. Habita em costas rochosas, praias e estuários onde se alimenta de mexilhões, lapas e outros invertebrados. Relativamente sedentário, com pares que mantêm territórios costeiros. Nidifica no solo em costas rochosas ou de cascalho. A predação por mamíferos introduzidos e a perturbação humana são as principais ameaças para as suas colónias de cria.
