O ostraceiro-americano é uma ave costeira das Américas, de cor negra nas partes superiores e branca nas inferiores, com chamativo bico vermelho. Habita em praias, sapais, estuários e costas rochosas desde o nordeste do Canadá até à Argentina. Sondeia bivalves, vermes poliquetas e outros invertebrados na zona intertidal. Nidifica no solo em praias e dunas. A perturbação das zonas de nidificação é uma ameaça importante para as populações reprodutoras.
