Diese lauten Vögel kündigen ihr Revier mit einem markanten, ratternden Ruf an. Mit ihren kräftigen Schnäbeln graben sie bis zu 2,4 Meter tiefe Bruthöhlen in Flussufer.

Der Trauerschwan galt Europäern, die glaubten, alle Schwäne seien weiß, einst als unmöglich, was ihn zu einem berühmten philosophischen Beispiel für das Scheitern induktiver Schlussfolgerungen machte.
