Der Gürtelfischer ist insofern ungewöhnlich, als das Weibchen bunter gefärbt ist als das Männchen und ein zusätzliches rostrotes Brustband trägt. Diese lauten Vögel kündigen ihr Revier mit einem markanten, ratternden Ruf an. Mit ihren kräftigen Schnäbeln graben sie bis zu 2,4 Meter tiefe Bruthöhlen in Flussufer.
