O pato-de-cauda-rígida-europeu é um pato ameaçado das zonas húmidas do Paleártico. Os machos têm cabeça branca característica com calota preta e bico azul brilhante. Habita lagos salinos e rios de planície de interior. As populações sofreram declínios drásticos devido à perda de habitat e hibridização com o pato-de-cauda-rígida-americano introduzido. A sua conservação é considerada uma prioridade na Europa, com programas de controlo do pato americano implementados em vários países.

Male has entirely white head with small black crown patch, rich chestnut-brown body, and large bulbous powder-blue bill. Female is brown with pale whitish face divided by dark streak across cheeks; bill grey.

Breeds in Spain, Turkey, central Asia, and Mongolia. Winters in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and northern India. Globally endangered.
