El pato malvasía es un pato de cola tiesa en peligro de extinción con el macho de llamativa cabeza blanca y cuello negro con el pico azul brillante hinchado en la base. En el pasado fue cazado intensamente y su hábitat fue drenado, lo que lo llevó al borde de la extinción en el siglo XX. Gracias a esfuerzos de conservación intensivos, sus poblaciones se han recuperado parcialmente en el Mediterráneo.

Male has entirely white head with small black crown patch, rich chestnut-brown body, and large bulbous powder-blue bill. Female is brown with pale whitish face divided by dark streak across cheeks; bill grey.

Breeds in Spain, Turkey, central Asia, and Mongolia. Winters in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and northern India. Globally endangered.
