O merganso-de-crista é um pato mergulhador de tamanho médio com um topete duplo desgrenhado que lhe dá uma aparência característica. Os machos têm cabeça verde iridescente com o topete desgrenhado, peito ruivo mosqueado e flancos cinzentos. É mais costeiro do que outros mergansos, criando frequentemente em costas marinhas e estuários. Hiberna em costas marinhas ao longo da Europa, Ásia e América do Norte. É amplamente distribuído no Hemisfério Norte.

Male has dark green shaggy double crest, speckled chestnut breast band, white collar, and grey flanks; red bill. Female has rufous-brown head with ragged crest blending gradually into grey neck without sharp contrast.
