El serrano o merganso mediano es un merganso de tamaño mediano con el macho de cabeza verde con un desordenado moño y el pecho manchado de castaño. Ampliamente distribuido en el hemisferio norte, cría principalmente en costas marinas y grandes lagos, siendo uno de los pocos mergansos que cría regularmente en ambientes costeros. Inverna en costas marinas de mares templados.

Male has dark green shaggy double crest, speckled chestnut breast band, white collar, and grey flanks; red bill. Female has rufous-brown head with ragged crest blending gradually into grey neck without sharp contrast.
Habitat & Range
Distribución geográfica
Circumpolar breeder in boreal and Arctic zones. Winters on coasts and large water bodies south to the Mediterranean and southern Asia.
Diet & Feeding
Dives for small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates in coastal and freshwater habitats. Pursues fish cooperatively in groups.
