O pernilongo-americano é uma esbelta ave pernalta das zonas húmidas norte-americanas e centro-americanas. O macho tem cabeça preta, dorso preto e partes inferiores brancas; a fêmea tem o dorso acastanhado. As longas patas cor-de-rosa são características. Alimenta-se de invertebrados aquáticos em águas pouco profundas. A perda de zonas húmidas reduziu os seus habitats de nidificação, mas adaptou-se a lagos artificiais e arrozais.
