Semelhante ao pernilongo comum com longas patas rosa-vermelhas, mas com a cabeça e as partes inferiores completamente brancas. Habita em lagos salinos, estuários e pântanos pouco profundos. Alimenta-se de invertebrados aquáticos. Nidifica em colónias no solo perto da água. A inundação dos ninhos e a predação são as principais ameaças.
