O pernilongo-comum é uma esbelta ave pernalta com longas patas vermelhas, plumagem branca e negra e um bico fino e negro. Habita em zonas húmidas pouco profundas, lagoas e sapais da Europa, Ásia, África e Austrália. Alimenta-se sondando invertebrados aquáticos em águas pouco profundas. Nidifica em colónias nas margens de zonas húmidas. As chamadas são ruidosas e persistentes. As populações têm beneficiado da criação de zonas húmidas.
