El cigüeñuela americano es un ave zancuda esbelta de los humedales norteamericanos y centroamericanos. El macho tiene cabeza negra, dorso negro y partes inferiores blancas; la hembra tiene el dorso pardo. Las largas patas rosas son características. Se alimenta de invertebrados acuáticos en aguas poco profundas. La pérdida de humedales ha reducido sus hábitats de nidificación, pero se ha adaptado a estanques artificiales y arrozales.
