El cigüeñuela común (unos 180 g) es inconfundible por sus extraordinariamente largas patas rosas —la mayor relación pata/cuerpo de cualquier ave— su plumaje blanco y negro y su pico negro fino. Vive en zonas húmedas poco profundas, salinas y lagunas de Europa del sur, África y Asia, donde vadea en busca de invertebrados acuáticos e insectos. Las colonias son bulliciosas y agresivas con los depredadores. En invierno migra al sur de África.
