O pato-de-cauda-longa é um pequeno pato marinho do Ártico com plumagem marcantemente diferente entre estações. Os machos têm longas plumas centrais da cauda e mudam de plumagem amplamente branca no inverno para mais escura no verão. Chama frequentemente e de forma exuberante durante o voo. Cria em zonas húmidas da tundra ártica e hiberna em costas marinhas e grandes lagos. As populações têm sofrido declínios substanciais em algumas regiões, levantando preocupações de conservação.
