El pato havelda es un pato marino ártico reconocible por la larga y estrecha cola del macho y su llamativo plumaje blanco y negro. Cría en la tundra ártica y en las costas del norte, invernando en grandes masas de agua en mares abiertos. Es notable por bucear a mayor profundidad que cualquier otro pato, registrándose inmersiones de hasta 60 metros.
