O pato-do-mato é um grande pato com origem na América Central e do Sul que foi amplamente domesticado e distribuído pelo mundo. Os machos selvagens são principalmente pretos com remendos brancos nas asas e face vermelha-carnuda com carúnculas. As fêmeas são menores e mais castanhas. Nidifica em buracos de árvore junto a zonas húmidas tropicais. A forma doméstica é muito variável em cor e tamanho. Frequentemente hybridiza com patos-reais produzindo patos mulard estéreis.
