O êider-comum é o maior pato marinho da Europa e uma das aves mais pesadas capazes de voo. Os machos têm plumagem marcante branca e preta com tonalidades verdes na cabeça e são maiores do que a maioria dos patos. As fêmeas são conhecidas pelo seu penugem ultramacio, a famosa edredon de êider, usado para forrar ninhos. Habita costas rochosas do Ártico e subártico. As populações sofreram declínios em algumas regiões devido a contaminantes, doenças e perturbação.
