O pato mexicano, também conhecido como pato do México, é um pato de tamanho médio que habita zonas húmidas e rios do planalto central do México e do sudoeste dos Estados Unidos. Apresenta uma plumagem castanha mosqueada semelhante à fêmea do pato-real, com o qual se hybridiza em algumas regiões. É considerado uma espécie distinta ou subespécie do pato-real dependendo da autoridade taxonómica. A sua população enfrenta ameaças devido à hibridização, perda de habitat e alterações no regime hídrico.

Similar to Mottled Duck; mottled brown plumage with pale buff head showing dark crown and eye stripe. Iridescent blue-purple speculum with white borders. Yellow-orange bill. Both sexes similar. SW USA and Mexico.
Habitat & Range
Freshwater lakes, marshes, and rivers at 1,000–2,500 m in the highlands of Mexico and the southwestern United States. Uses agricultural ponds and irrigation canals.
