El pato mexicano, también conocido como pato de México, es un pato de tamaño mediano que habita en humedales y ríos de la meseta central de México y el suroeste de Estados Unidos. Muy similar al pato de collar, fue durante mucho tiempo considerado una subespecie del mismo; los machos presentan un plumaje marrón moteado sin la cabeza verde brillante característica del pato de collar.

Similar to Mottled Duck; mottled brown plumage with pale buff head showing dark crown and eye stripe. Iridescent blue-purple speculum with white borders. Yellow-orange bill. Both sexes similar. SW USA and Mexico.
Habitat & Range
Freshwater lakes, marshes, and rivers at 1,000–2,500 m in the highlands of Mexico and the southwestern United States. Uses agricultural ponds and irrigation canals.

Female gives a Mallard-like, descending quacking series; male utters a soft, nasal grunt. Vocalizations essentially identical to Mallard; found in Mexican interior wetlands and the Rio Grande.
