El cauquén real es un ganso del sur de América del Sur que habita en pastizales andinos y patagónicos desde Chile hasta Argentina. Tiene la cabeza gris, el cuerpo barrado de negro y blanco, y las alas con partes blancas y negras muy llamativas. Es una especie migratoria que durante el invierno desciende a menores altitudes y se desplaza hacia el este de la Patagonia.

Gray head and neck contrast with chestnut breast and rufous-barred flanks. Back brown; belly white. White wing patch in flight with iridescent green speculum. Yellow-orange legs. Sexes similar but females smaller.
Habitat & Range
Temperate forests, forest clearings, and lake margins in southern Chile and Patagonian Argentina. Partially migratory; breeds in beech forest zones and winters on open grasslands farther north.
