El ánsar careto o ganso careto mayor es un ganso mediano de color pardo con una llamativa mancha blanca en la frente y barras negras en el vientre. Tiene un amplio rango de cría en la tundra ártica del hemisferio norte y migra a zonas templadas de Europa, Asia y América del Norte para pasar el invierno, donde a menudo se reúne en grandes bandadas en campos agrícolas.

Plumaje
Brown-gray body with white forehead patch bordered by white band at bill base. Underparts with bold irregular black bars on belly. Orange bill; orange-yellow legs. Juveniles lack white front and belly bars.
Habitat & Range
Breeds on Arctic and subarctic tundra and peatlands. Winters on estuaries, agricultural fields, freshwater marshes, and flooded meadows across Europe, Asia, and North America. One of the most widespread geese.
Distribución geográfica
Breeds in the potholes region of the northern Great Plains; winters in the southern United States and along the Gulf Coast.
Diet & Feeding
Dabbles for aquatic invertebrates, seeds, and plant material; diet shifts heavily toward invertebrates in breeding season.
