Breeding males have an elaborate pattern of orange, green, white, and purple with distinctive orange sail feathers on the back. Females are grey-brown with a white eye-ring and stripe.

Anders als die meisten Enten nistet die Mandarinente in Baumhöhlen bis zu 9 Meter über dem Boden, sodass die erst einen Tag alten Küken zu Boden springen müssen.

Der Sekretär ist der einzige Greifvogel, der überwiegend zu Fuß jagt, indem er auf kranichartigen, bis zu 1,2 Meter langen Beinen durch die Graslandschaften schreitet. Sein Name soll von den Schmuckfedern herrühren, die an Schreibfedern hinter dem Ohr eines Sekretärs erinnern. Die Art gilt aufgrund von Lebensraumverlust und Bestandsrückgang in weiten Teilen ihres Verbreitungsgebiets als Stark gefährdet.
