Second in size only to the emperor penguin, the King Penguin stands about 95 cm tall, with dark blue-grey upperparts, a white belly, and vivid orange-gold patches on the sides of the head and upper breast. It breeds not on ice but on the flat and gently sloping beaches of sub-Antarctic islands, including South Georgia, Crozet, Kerguelen, Macquarie, and the Falklands, foraging across the surrounding Southern Ocean. Deep dives to between 100 and 300 metres bring up lanternfish and squid. A single egg is incubated for roughly 52 to 56 days, and the chick's exceptionally slow development means fledging can take 300 to 395 days. Like the emperor, it depends on individually distinct trumpeting calls to reunite mates and chicks in noisy colonies. It is listed as Least Concern.
О нас
The king penguin is the second-largest penguin species, known for its striking orange-gold head markings. Unlike most penguins, king penguins do not build nests — they incubate their single egg on their feet. Their 14-16 month breeding cycle is the longest of any penguin species.
