O pato-mascarado é um pequeno pato de cauda rígida encontrado nas Américas, do México ao norte da Argentina. É o único pato de cauda rígida do Novo Mundo que não pertence ao género Oxyura. Os machos têm cabeça preta marcante com bico azul brilhante em reprodução. Habita lagos e pântanos tropicais com vegetação flutuante densa. É um pato esquivo que raramente voa mas mergulha frequentemente para escapar. As populações são esparsas e poucos conhecidas.

Male is rich rufous-chestnut with black mask from forehead to face, boldly spotted black on upperparts; blue bill. Female is streaked buff and brown with two dark facial stripes crossing pale cheeks.

Resident from Mexico and the Caribbean south through Central America to northern South America. Found in lowland freshwater marshes and lagoons.
