El pato enmascarado chico es una pequeña focha-pato de cola tiesa del Nuevo Mundo con el macho de color castaño rojizo con la cara negra y un manchón azul en el pico. Habita en estanques y lagunas de agua dulce con vegetación densa en América Central y del Sur, y el sur de Texas. Es un buceo hábil, usando las patas y las alas para moverse bajo el agua.

Male is rich rufous-chestnut with black mask from forehead to face, boldly spotted black on upperparts; blue bill. Female is streaked buff and brown with two dark facial stripes crossing pale cheeks.

Resident from Mexico and the Caribbean south through Central America to northern South America. Found in lowland freshwater marshes and lagoons.
