O merganso-brasileiro é um pato mergulhador criticamente ameaçado endémico do Brasil, com populações remanescentes muito pequenas também na Argentina e Paraguai. É um dos patos mais raros do mundo. Os machos têm cabeça e pescoço verde escuro iridescente e peito branco. Habita rios de montanha de correnteza rápida com margens rochosas em florestas de mata atlântica e cerrado. As ameaças incluem poluição, degradação de habitat e perturbação.

Male has dark glossy greenish-black head with long shaggy crest; finely vermiculated grey body, white wing patch. Female similar but with rufous-chestnut wash on head and shorter crest.

Critically endangered; restricted to a few rivers in southern Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. Found on fast-flowing rivers in Atlantic Forest.

Dives for small fish in fast-flowing South American rivers. Critically endangered; uses serrated bill to catch fish in clear streams.
