O pato-belo é o mais pequeno dos mergansos e um dos patos mais distintos da Europa. Os machos em reprodução têm plumagem branca e preta contrastante com o rosto branco marcante com manchas pretas ao redor dos olhos e bico cinzento pequeno. Cria em buracos de árvore em florestas boreais e junto a lagos de água limpa. Hiberna em zonas costeiras e grandes lagos da Europa Ocidental e Ásia Oriental. Os casais formam-se durante a hibernação com exibições elaboradas.

Male is largely white with black eye patch, black lines on back, and fine black lines on flanks creating a cracked-ice pattern. Female has chestnut-red head, white cheeks, and grey body.
Habitat & Range

Breeds in boreal forests of northern Europe and Siberia. Winters on large lakes and coasts from western Europe east to Japan and China.

Dives for small fish, aquatic insects, and crustaceans in freshwater and coastal habitats. Uses serrated bill to grip slippery prey.
