O pato-fusco-de-asa-branca americano é um grande pato marinho do norte da América do Norte e Sibéria oriental. Distingue-se da espécie relacionada pelo bico com ponta laranja-amarela e tubérculo. Os machos são principalmente pretos com mancha branca abaixo do olho e remendos brancos nas asas visíveis em voo. Cria em zonas húmidas florestais boreais e hiberna em costas marinhas. Foi recentemente separado do pato-fusco-da-sibéria como espécie plena.

Plumagem
Male is black with conspicuous white secondaries and a white comma-shaped mark below eye; orange-yellow bill with black basal knob. Female dark brownish-black with two pale facial patches and white wing patch.
Habitat & Range

Breeds in boreal forest and tundra of interior North America. Winters along Pacific and Atlantic coasts south to California and the Gulf states.

Dives for molluscs, crustaceans, and small fish in coastal and inland waters. Favours mussels and clams; forages in flocks.
