O merganso-encapuzado é um pato mergulhador pequeno da América do Norte com um topete notável. Os machos têm um topete redondo e expansível branco com bordas pretas, criando um efeito de leque impressionante quando erguido. Cria em buracos de árvore em florestas ripícolas de água doce. Alimenta-se de peixes, crustáceos e invertebrados aquáticos capturados por mergulho. Hiberna em zonas costeiras e de interior com alguma presença em estuários salinos.

Male has fan-shaped black-and-white erectile crest; black head and neck, white breast with two black bars, rich cinnamon flanks. Female is greyish-brown with rusty-cinnamon crest, paler below.

Breeds in forested wetlands of North America from southern Canada to the northern United States. Winters on rivers and lakes south to Mexico.
Diet & Feeding
Dives for small fish, aquatic invertebrates, and frogs in clear freshwater streams and ponds. Uses sharp serrated bill to catch prey.
