O painho-europeu é o menor petrel da Europa. Tem plumagem negra com a rabadilla branca. Nidifica em tocas e fendas nas costas rochosas das ilhas atlânticas desde a Islândia até às Ilhas Canárias. Alimenta-se de pequenos peixes, crustáceos e plâncton em alto mar. Visita o ninho de noite. Os ratos e os gatos ferais nas ilhas de cria são as principais ameaças.
