O pato-arlequim é um elegante pato marinho com uma plumagem intrincada de branco, preto e castanho-ferrugíneo nos machos que lembra o fato de um arlequim. Habita rios de montanha de águas rápidas durante a criação e costas rochosas de forte batimento no inverno. O seu modo de vida torrentícola é único entre os patos marinhos. É nativo de ambos os lados do Pacífico Norte e Atlântico Norte, com populações atlânticas agora restritas ao leste do Canadá e Islândia.
