Sobre
O pato-bufão é o menor pato mergulhador da América do Norte. Os machos têm cabeça iridescente verde-purpuro com um grande remendo branco que se estende da nuca para cada lado. Cria em buracos de árvore em florestas boreais. É o único pato mergulhador americano que consegue entrar em buracos de madeiro pica-pau. Hiberna em costas marinhas protegidas e lagos de interior. Os filhotes caem de buracos altos logo após eclodir sem se magoarem.

Male has iridescent green-purple head with a large triangular white patch from behind eye over crown; body clean white except for black back. Female is dark sooty-brown with a single small oval white cheek patch.

Breeds in boreal forest of western and central North America. Winters along both coasts and interior lakes from southern Canada south to Mexico.
Diet & Feeding
Dives for aquatic insects, crustaceans, and small molluscs in freshwater and coastal habitats. One of the smallest diving ducks.
