O pato-de-cabeça-vermelha americano é um grande pato mergulhador que cria nos pântanos de tufo das pradarias e tundra da América do Norte. Os machos têm cabeça ruiva, peito preto e dorso cinzento. Hiberna em zonas costeiras e grandes lagos. Alimenta-se principalmente de plantas aquáticas, especialmente erva da Chesapeake nas suas zonas de hibernação. É um pato cinegético popular, embora as populações tenham sofrido declínios históricos.

Males have rich chestnut-red head and neck; black breast; pale canvas-gray body; white flanks. Sloping forehead profile with dark red bill and red eye. Females gray-brown with reddish-brown head. Dimorphic diving duck.
Habitat & Range
Breeds on prairie potholes and boreal lakes across western North America. Winters on large open lakes, reservoirs, estuaries, and Chesapeake Bay. Sensitive to loss of prairie wetlands.
