O pato-negrinha é um pato mergulhador de tamanho médio comum nas zonas húmidas de água doce do Paleártico. Os machos têm plumagem preta e branca marcante e um topete pendente distintivo. É amplamente distribuído na Europa e Ásia, criando em zonas húmidas de pradaria, floresta e tundra. É um dos patos mergulhadores mais comuns na Europa. Hiberna em zonas costeiras e grandes corpos de água dulcícola em toda a Europa e sul da Ásia.

Plumagem
Males black with white flanks; rounded head with long drooping black tuft. Yellow eye. Females dark brown with shorter tuft; pale flanks; sometimes white at base of bill. Bold white wing stripe in flight. Dimorphic.
Habitat & Range
Breeds on freshwater lakes and rivers with emergent vegetation across Eurasia from Iceland and western Europe east to Siberia and Japan. Winters on large open lakes, reservoirs, and sheltered coastal bays.

Breeds in sub-Arctic and boreal Canada; winters along the Atlantic coast and in the Caribbean. Rare elsewhere in winter.

Dives for molluscs, crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates; diet dominated by hard-shelled benthic prey in coastal shallow water.
