El porrón moñudo es un pato buceador fácilmente reconocible por el largo mechón negro que cae desde la nuca del macho. El macho es de color negro brillante con los flancos blancos; la hembra es de color marrón oscuro con un mechón más corto. Ampliamente distribuido por Europa y Asia, habita en lagos, embalses y ríos de corriente lenta.

Plumaje
Males black with white flanks; rounded head with long drooping black tuft. Yellow eye. Females dark brown with shorter tuft; pale flanks; sometimes white at base of bill. Bold white wing stripe in flight. Dimorphic.
Habitat & Range
Breeds on freshwater lakes and rivers with emergent vegetation across Eurasia from Iceland and western Europe east to Siberia and Japan. Winters on large open lakes, reservoirs, and sheltered coastal bays.
Distribución geográfica
Breeds in sub-Arctic and boreal Canada; winters along the Atlantic coast and in the Caribbean. Rare elsewhere in winter.

Dives for molluscs, crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates; diet dominated by hard-shelled benthic prey in coastal shallow water.
