Os machos têm cabeça arredondada ruiva característica, peito preto e corpo cinzento claro. Muitas fêmeas são parasitas de ninho, pondo ovos nos ninhos de outras aves aquáticas. Hiberna em zonas costeiras ao longo de ambas as costas e no Golfo do México, onde pode formar grandes bandos.
