The Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) is the smallest member of the cockatoo family, Cacatuidae. Wild-type males are grey with white wing panels, a yellow face and bright orange cheek patches; females are duller and show barring on the underside of the tail, and many colour mutations exist in captivity. The short, curved grey bill is typical of the family. In Australia the species is nomadic, moving in flocks through the arid and semi-arid interior - scrubland, farmland and woodland near water - and generally avoiding the coast, tracking seed and water as they become available. Foraging is done largely on the ground, on seeds, grain and berries. Adults measure about 32 cm and 90 g. The IUCN Red List rates the species Least Concern.
