About These Birds
Flesh-footed Shearwater
41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.
Barau's Petrel
38 cm, wingspan 96 cm. Dark above with white forehead; white below with dark carpal bar and partial collar. Breeds only on Réunion; Endangered with around 4,000 pairs. Threatened by light attraction of fledglings; conservation lighting campaigns reduce strandings. Migrates to Indian Ocean.
