El tarro de Nueva Zelanda o paradise shelduck es un llamativo y grande pato endémico de Nueva Zelanda donde el dimorfismo sexual es inusual: la hembra tiene la cabeza blanca y el macho tiene la cabeza oscura. El cuerpo es de color castaño oscuro con marcas alares de colores brillantes. Ha prosperado en pastizales agrícolas y es uno de los patos más abundantes de Nueva Zelanda.

Plumaje
Extreme dimorphism. Males have black head with green gloss and black-and-chestnut body. Females have pure white head and neck contrasting with rich chestnut-rufous body. Both show white wing patches. New Zealand endemic.
Habitat & Range
Open farmland, grassland, lake shores, riverbeds, and wetlands throughout both main islands of New Zealand. Nests in caves, burrows, hollow trees, and dense vegetation. Highly territorial in the breeding season.
