El mergo mayor o serreta grande es el mayor de los mergansos, con el macho de cabeza verde-negro brillante y el cuerpo blanco con la espalda negra. Habita en ríos y lagos de agua clara en bosques boreales y montañosos del hemisferio norte. Es un experto pescador que captura peces grandes sumergiéndose; en los ríos, puede perseguir peces salmónidos de gran tamaño.

Male has dark green iridescent head, salmon-pink suffused white body, and black back; red serrated bill. Female has rufous-brown head with neat white chin patch, grey body, and pinkish-buff breast.
Habitat & Range
Distribución geográfica
Breeds across boreal forests of North America, Europe, and Asia. Winters on coasts and large rivers south to the Mediterranean and South Asia.
Diet & Feeding
Dives for fish, especially salmon and trout, in rivers and lakes. Also takes frogs, crustaceans, and molluscs. Highly piscivorous.
