El pato de Laysan es uno de los patos más raros del mundo, confinado históricamente al atolón de Laysan en las islas Hawaii del noroeste. Presenta plumaje marrón moteado con un llamativo parche blanco alrededor del ojo. Casi extinguido a principios del siglo XX por la introducción de conejos que destruyeron su hábitat, se ha recuperado lentamente gracias a los esfuerzos de conservación.

Brown plumage mottled and streaked buff and dark brown. White eye-ring contrasts with dark face. Both sexes similar; females show reduced white eye ring. Iridescent speculum. Critically endangered; only on Laysan Atoll.

Restricted to Laysan Island and Midway Atoll in the Hawaiian Islands. Inhabits the central hypersaline lagoon and surrounding vegetation. Feeds on brine shrimp and flies around the lagoon margin.
