El pato de Madagascar es una especie en peligro crítico de extinción endémica de Madagascar, donde persiste únicamente en unos pocos humedales costeros en el noroeste de la isla. Tiene plumaje marrón rojizo moteado con la cabeza rayada y un pico azulado. La destrucción del hábitat de los manglares y los humedales costeros, junto con la caza, ha reducido drásticamente su población.

Plain warm brown plumage with faint spotting; head slightly paler buff-brown. Orange-pink bill. Dull reddish-brown speculum. Orange legs. Sexes similar. Endangered Madagascar endemic; mangrove and coastal wetland specialist.
Habitat & Range
Mangroves, coastal lagoons, freshwater lakes, and rivers of western Madagascar. Endangered; restricted to small fragmented wetland areas. Nests in mangrove cavities or tree holes near water.

Breeds across northern and central North America; winters in the southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean.

Dives for molluscs, crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates; diet dominated by hard-shelled benthic invertebrates year-round.
