Die Kohlmeise ist die größte europäische Meisenart und einer der am besten erforschten Wildvögel der Welt. Studien im Wytham Wood bei Oxford verfolgen die Kohlmeisenpopulation bereits seit den 1940er-Jahren und haben enorm zur Ökologie- und Evolutionsforschung beigetragen. Berühmt wurde die einfallsreiche Kohlmeise dafür, dass sie im Großbritannien des 20. Jahrhunderts lernte, Milchflaschendeckel zu öffnen.

Die Mandarinente gilt weithin als die schönste Ente der Welt. In der ostasiatischen Kultur symbolisiert sie Liebe und Treue, da sie feste Paarbindungen eingeht. Anders als die meisten Enten nistet die Mandarinente in Baumhöhlen bis zu 9 Meter über dem Boden, sodass die erst einen Tag alten Küken zu Boden springen müssen.
