Der Vogel diente in Japan als Vorbild für die Formgebung des Shinkansen-Hochgeschwindigkeitszugs – die Form seines Schnabels wurde übernommen, um Schallknalle beim Verlassen von Tunneln zu verringern.
Schuhschnabel
Der Schuhschnabel ist wegen seines urzeitlichen Erscheinungsbilds und seines gewaltigen Schnabels einer der begehrtesten Vögel für Vogelbeobachter in Afrika. Er kann stundenlang reglos verharren, bevor er nach vorne stößt, um Beute mit seinem riesigen Schnabel zu ergreifen. Trotz einer Körpergröße von über einem Meter wiegt der Schuhschnabel dank seiner hohlen Knochen vergleichsweise wenig.
