Diese lauten Vögel kündigen ihr Revier mit einem markanten, ratternden Ruf an. Mit ihren kräftigen Schnäbeln graben sie bis zu 2,4 Meter tiefe Bruthöhlen in Flussufer.

Diese geduldigen Jäger können lange Zeit reglos verharren, bevor sie mit bemerkenswerter Geschwindigkeit nach Beute stoßen.
